Daring Ascent: A Rock Climber's Brave Journey Up Taipei 101
Imagine scaling a skyscraper, 508 meters tall, with nothing but your bare hands and sheer determination. That's exactly what American rock climber Alex Honnold embarked on, leaving the crowd in awe and raising eyebrows over the ethics of such a daring feat.
The scene was set in Taipei, Taiwan, where Honnold began his ascent of the iconic Taipei 101 skyscraper on a Sunday afternoon. Cheers filled the air as he gracefully navigated the tower's metal beams, his red shirt a bold statement against the urban backdrop.
But here's where it gets controversial... Honnold's climb was being live-streamed on Netflix with a slight delay, adding a layer of excitement and concern. The ascent, initially planned for Saturday, was postponed due to rain, a testament to the meticulous planning behind this extreme endeavor.
Honnold, renowned for his ropeless climb of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park, tackled Taipei 101 with a unique strategy. He climbed up one corner, using small outcroppings as footholds, and periodically maneuvering around ornamental structures that added complexity to the climb.
The building's 101 floors presented a unique challenge, with the middle section, known as the 'bamboo boxes', being the toughest. Divided into eight segments, each with eight floors of overhanging climbing, Honnold took short breaks on the balconies before continuing his ascent.
While Honnold won't be the first climber to conquer Taipei 101, he will be the first to do so without a rope. A feat that French rock climber Alain Robert achieved in 2004, as part of the grand opening celebration, but with a safety rope.
