Australian Open 2023: Wang Xinyu's Stunning Win & Djokovic's Record 400th Grand Slam Victory (2026)

China's Rising Star Shines at the Australian Open

In a scorching Melbourne, China's Wang Xinyu stole the show, advancing to the fourth round of the Australian Open singles. But here's where it gets controversial: the oppressive heat, which reached a staggering 40 degrees Celsius, played a pivotal role in the day's events.

Day seven started early, and for good reason. The extreme temperatures forced a suspension of play across Melbourne Park in the afternoon. Wang's match against Linda Noskova, the 13th seed, was halted at 2-2 in the first set, only to resume several hours later.

Despite the disruption, Wang remained focused and aggressive, securing a 7-5, 6-4 victory. Her next challenge? A fourth-round match against American fourth seed Amanda Anisimova.

"It's an incredible feeling," Wang said. "The support here is amazing, and I'm thrilled to have won, despite the tough conditions."

Wang, ranked 46th in the world, is China's highest-ranked player in Melbourne following Zheng Qinwen's withdrawal. She has lived up to expectations, reaching her second career final in Auckland, where she finished as runner-up to Elina Svitolina.

In the women's draw, world No. 2 Iga Swiatek overcame a patchy performance to defeat Anna Kalinskaya 6-1, 1-6, 6-1. Swiatek will face Australian qualifier Maddison Inglis, who advanced after Naomi Osaka's withdrawal due to injury.

Defending champion Madison Keys had a comfortable win over former world number one Karolina Pliskova, setting up a clash with American Jessica Pegula. Pegula, for her part, was grateful for a shorter match, avoiding the brutal heat.

Former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina also progressed, adding to the excitement.

In the men's draw, Jannik Sinner battled full-body cramps to defeat Eliot Spizzirri 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. The extreme heat at Rod Laver Arena took its toll, with Sinner requiring medical attention during the third set. Fortunately, the closure of the retractable roof provided a much-needed break.

"He played exceptionally well," Sinner acknowledged. "Today was a physical struggle for me, but I was fortunate with the heat rule. I'm pleased with my performance."

Novak Djokovic, the four-time grand slam champion, showed no signs of his earlier fall, clinching a record 400th grand slam win against Botic van de Zandschulp. The 24-time grand slam champion fell awkwardly in the third set, but he quickly recovered, going on to win 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (4).

Djokovic's condition was "really good," he said, adding, "I'm taking it one step at a time."

The Serb also had a close call when he nearly hit a ball kid, a reminder of his disqualification at the 2020 US Open. Fortunately, no harm was done, and Djokovic will face 16th seed Jakub Mensik next.

In other men's action, fifth seed Lorenzo Musetti edged out Tomas Machac in a five-set thriller, while eighth seed Ben Shelton advanced. American ninth seed Taylor Fritz defeated 40-year-old Stan Wawrinka, who played his final match at the tournament where he won his first grand slam title.

In the women's doubles, China's Guo Hanyu and France's Kristina Mladenovic defeated Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Clara Tauson in three sets.

Round four begins on Sunday, with top seeds Aryna Sabalenka and Carlos Alcaraz leading the way. Title contenders Coco Gauff and Alexander Zverev will also be in action. Who will emerge victorious? The Australian Open promises more thrilling moments as the competition heats up. ■
