Biddestone Village Protects Last Pub: White Horse Inn Listed as Community Asset (2026)

A village is celebrating! The White Horse Inn in Biddestone has been saved, at least for now, after being officially recognized as a community asset. This decision secures the pub's future for the next five years, offering a lifeline to a community that has already seen its fair share of losses.

Parish Councillor Andrew Short spearheaded the effort, recognizing the devastating impact the pub's closure would have on the village. He applied to register The White Horse Inn as an Asset of Community Value (ACV), a move that has now been approved by Wiltshire Council, ensuring its protection until December 2030.

Biddestone, located near Chippenham, has already witnessed the closure of its village shop, post office, and another pub, which was converted into seven homes. The White Horse Inn, therefore, stands as the last remaining pub, making its preservation even more crucial for the community's social fabric.

But here's where it gets interesting: the ACV listing comes with specific implications. Should the current owner decide to sell the pub, they are legally obligated to notify the council, giving the community the first opportunity to purchase it. This measure empowers the villagers, providing them with a chance to safeguard their beloved gathering place.

The council's decision highlighted the pivotal role the inn plays in fostering community spirit. The White Horse Inn hosts various events, including quiz nights, curry nights, and bridge games, bringing residents together and creating a sense of belonging.

Adrian Foster, the cabinet member for strategic planning, confirmed the approval, stating that the property is now officially listed as an ACV. The Stonegate Pub Company, which owns the pub, is currently seeking new tenants, estimating the potential annual revenue to be around £422,739.

What do you think? Is protecting local pubs like this essential for maintaining community identity? Do you agree with the council's decision, or are there other factors that should be considered? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
