Get ready to dive deep! The Seas pavilion at EPCOT is turning the big 4-0 this month, and it's a perfect time to revisit this beloved attraction. Formerly known as The Living Seas, this pavilion has been captivating guests for decades, offering a fascinating look into the underwater world.
The Seas pavilion's history dates back to before EPCOT even opened its doors in 1982. Originally slated for a 1984 debut, it finally surfaced on January 15, 1986. For a significant period, until 1998, it was sponsored by United Technologies.
When it first opened, The Living Seas offered an immersive experience. Visitors could enjoy a film about the oceans, followed by a simulated descent to the ocean floor via the Hydrolator, and a ride through the Caribbean Coral Reef. The journey culminated in the SeaBase Alpha aquarium, showcasing a diverse array of marine life.
But here's where it gets controversial... The pavilion underwent a significant transformation in 2003, shortly after the release of Finding Nemo. Turtle Talk with Crush, which opened in November 2004, quickly became a fan favorite. The entire pavilion closed in August 2005 for refurbishment and began to reopen in November 2005. Turtle Talk was moved to a larger area and the entire pavilion received new Finding Nemo decorations.
The Caribbean Coral Reef Ride, however, had closed earlier, in late 2001, due to declining park attendance. It was later reimagined as The Seas with Nemo & Friends, which opened in early 2007.
Over the past few years, Disney has continued to refresh The Seas. New signs were installed for the SeaBase aquarium and the Coral Reef Restaurant. In late 2023, the façade received a fresh coat of paint and updated lighting.
Last year, the aquarium evolved from a long-term care facility to a short-term rehabilitation center. The diver lock-out chamber demonstration also returned after a five-year hiatus, offering guests a unique glimpse into underwater exploration.
