Poland is roaring into the quarter-finals of the United Cup! After a stunning victory, Hubert Hurkacz has secured Poland's spot in the last eight, leaving fans buzzing with excitement. On Wednesday, Hurkacz showcased his prowess by defeating Tallon Griekspoor with a score of 6-3, 7-6(4).
To clinch their place, Poland needed just one win, and Hurkacz delivered in style. His performance was nothing short of dominant, highlighted by a staggering 20 aces and not a single break point conceded. Talk about a serving masterclass!
Hurkacz himself admitted to some pre-match jitters, stating, "Definitely didn’t know how I was going to start the season. Haven’t played for seven months, so you don’t really know what to expect." He added, "I was playing okay in practice, but practice is so different from the match when you have so many emotions, you have fans around. I’m quite positively surprised and pleased with that performance out there.”
And this is the part most people miss... Before this tournament, Hurkacz was sidelined since June 2025 due to a knee injury that required surgery. But the former No. 6 player in the PIF ATP Rankings has come back with a vengeance, securing straight-sets victories against formidable opponents like World No. 3 Alexander Zverev and Griekspoor.
Hurkacz shared his perspective, saying, "After such a long period you’re just so excited to be out there and it also gives you a different perspective on things. I think that’s why I’m able to perform maybe better and even stay calm in the difficult moments."
Now, Poland is set to face home favorite Australia in Sydney on Friday evening. This promises to be a thrilling match! Hurkacz and his team are on a mission, aiming for their first United Cup title after two consecutive runner-up finishes. Could this be their year? What do you think about Poland's chances?
