Interim Bail for Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi Extended Until January 27
In a significant development, a local court has decided to extend the interim bail of former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, until January 27. This extension pertains to the cases related to the events of May 9, along with five additional legal matters against them. The court has instructed Khan to ensure his presence at the next court session, either by attending in person or connecting via video link.
During the hearing, which was presided over by Additional District and Sessions Judge Muhammad Afzal Majoka, Advocate Shamsa Kayani represented both Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi. Unfortunately, the lack of the former prime minister's presence meant that no arguments regarding the bail applications could be presented. As a result, the judge opted to prolong the interim bail and scheduled the hearing for January 27, emphasizing the necessity for Khan to appear at that time.
Besides the May 9 incidents, Imran Khan is facing several other serious allegations, including attempts at murder and accusations of submitting fraudulent receipts. Additionally, a separate case has been filed against Bushra Bibi concerning the alleged submission of counterfeit receipts tied to the Toshakhana gifts.
In another ruling, Additional District and Sessions Judge Chaudhry Amir Zia also granted an extension of Bushra Bibi's interim bail based on her pre-arrest application, postponing the discussion on this matter until January 27. This particular case was initiated at the Ramna police station under the Peaceful Assembly and Public Order Act, along with other applicable laws.
Restrictions on Legal Representation
In a troubling turn of events, PTI lawyer Khalid Yousaf Chaudhry was once again denied access to meet Imran Khan. This meeting was crucial for obtaining his signature on power of attorney documents necessary for filing an appeal against Khan’s recent conviction in the Toshakhana case.
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party has expressed strong disapproval of what they describe as "deliberate obstructions" that hinder the party founder’s ability to appeal in the Toshakhana-II case. They allege that prison officials are blocking access for both Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi to their legal counsel at Adiala Jail, thereby preventing them from signing the necessary power of attorney. In their statement, the PTI highlighted that making Khan’s counsel wait for prolonged periods, closing the legal desk, and denying the facilities needed to finalize the power of attorney represent a calculated effort to obstruct justice.
According to the PTI, the Punjab Prison Rules of 1978, specifically Rules 178 and 179, affirm that every prisoner has the fundamental right to meet with their attorney, sign legal documents, and pursue appeals. They argue that the prison authorities do not have the authority to impose barriers that infringe upon these rights.
Moreover, the party contends that denying access to legal representation violates several constitutional articles, including Articles 10-A, 4, 9, and 25. They are calling for immediate and unrestricted access for the former Prime Minister to his legal counsel, urging that he be allowed to fully exercise his legal rights.
