Families in the Midlands are currently grappling with a concerning shift in their healthcare coverage as Cigna has announced a significant change regarding its relationship with Lexington Health. This development raises alarms for those insured through Cigna, creating a landscape of uncertainty for many.
Beginning January 1, Cigna will no longer maintain its agreement with Lexington Health and all associated physicians. What does this mean for patients? Essentially, Cigna will be classified as "out of network," which could lead to dramatically higher out-of-pocket expenses for necessary medical care. This alteration also extends to all practices affiliated with Lexington Health, amplifying concerns about accessibility to preferred healthcare providers.
Kimberly Shumaker, a patient under Cigna, recently received a notification from Lexington Health outlining these impending changes to her insurance coverage. "This is a serious situation," Shumaker expressed, revealing her frustration over the matter.
Lexington Health has stated that it was unable to reach a satisfactory agreement with Cigna despite efforts to negotiate terms. According to a representative from the health system, they had proposed significant rate increases, prompting Cigna to reassess the partnership. In a statement, Cigna confirmed that Lexington Health's decision to exit the network was influenced by demands for these substantial rate hikes.
Shumaker voiced her concern about the limitations imposed on patients in this scenario: "Our options are becoming limited, and it feels as though we are being subjected to circumstances beyond our control."
However, there is some reassurance for patients; Lexington Health has clarified that emergency visits will still be covered under Cigna. Additionally, patients who are undergoing ongoing treatment may be eligible for continuity-of-care benefits. This means they can maintain the same costs temporarily while they search for new healthcare providers. Yet, Shumaker remains apprehensive, particularly for patients with complex health issues. She remarked, "It's essential to have a healthcare provider familiar with your medical history to ensure you receive the most effective treatment. Losing access to your chosen doctors presents a significant challenge."
Lexington Health is advising all affected patients to get in touch with Cigna directly for further clarification and guidance regarding these changes. Both Cigna and Lexington Health have indicated their willingness to continue negotiations. Nonetheless, if no agreement is reached, the revised terms will take effect on January 1.
