Patrick Mahomes Torn ACL: Chiefs QB Injury Update vs Chargers (2026)

The Kansas City Chiefs' season took a devastating turn as star quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a torn ACL during a Week 15 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. This injury not only sidelines Mahomes but also carries significant implications for the team's future.

An MRI confirmed the devastating news: Mahomes' left ACL was torn. The team promptly announced that they are exploring surgical options.

The injury occurred during the final moments of the game. While attempting to extend a play, Mahomes threw the ball away just before his left leg was awkwardly twisted. Chargers defensive lineman Da'Shawn Hand brought him down in the process. Immediately, Mahomes clutched his left knee in obvious pain. He needed assistance to leave the field, visibly struggling as he made his way to the locker room.

Mahomes expressed his disappointment on social media, stating, "Don't know why this had to happen. And not going to lie it's hurts." He added, "But all we can do now is Trust in God and attack every single day over and over again. Thank you Chiefs kingdom for always supporting me and for everyone who has reached out and sent prayers. I Will be back stronger than ever."

But here's where it gets controversial... Mahomes had been dealing with a knee issue in the preceding weeks and was under constant pressure from the Chargers' defense. He was sacked five times and faced significant pressure on 48.6% of his dropbacks, according to Next Gen Stats.

The loss to the Chargers also meant the Chiefs were officially eliminated from playoff contention. This marks the first time in Mahomes' eight seasons as a starter that the Chiefs will not compete in the postseason and the first time overall since 2014.

Mahomes, a two-time league MVP and three-time Super Bowl MVP, had previously led the Chiefs to at least the AFC Championship Game in every season since becoming the starting quarterback in 2018.

Gardner Minshew replaced Mahomes for the Chiefs' final drive, throwing a game-clinching interception.

The Chiefs, now with a record of 6-8, will face the Tennessee Titans, who have a record of 2-12, in Week 16.

What do you think? Does this injury signal a major shift in the AFC landscape? Will the Chiefs be able to recover without Mahomes? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
