But here's the good news: TransLink is taking action! They've announced plans to add two new fare gates, bringing the total to five. This upgrade is timely, as the station is expected to see a surge in passenger volumes during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. BC Place Stadium, just a short walk away, will host seven matches, and the station will be the primary entrance and exit for spectators.
The station's fare gates have long been inadequate for the passenger volumes they handle. In 2017, each gate saw an average of 3,500 entries per weekday, surpassing even Vancouver City Centre Station. SkyTrain stations typically have a minimum of three gates, but seven stations, including Yaletown-Roundhouse, operate with this limited number. However, TransLink is taking steps to improve. They've recently initiated a bidding process to design a new Compass fare payment system, including modernizing the fare gates. This project could cost over $500 million and is a significant investment in the future of SkyTrain.
