Ghana's exceptional partnership with the United States has been a topic of praise, with US officials highlighting its strength and effectiveness. This collaboration, encompassing security, migration, trade, and law enforcement, has been described as a cornerstone of US interests in West Africa and beyond.
During a recent press briefing in Accra, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for West Africa, William Stevens, emphasized Ghana's pivotal role in advancing US objectives. He noted that Ghana's leadership has fostered an environment conducive to diplomatic ties and international business operations.
"Ghana's cooperation has been a game-changer for us. It showcases the country's support for our presence and goals in the region and globally. Doing business with Ghana has become significantly easier," Stevens remarked.
Stevens further emphasized Ghana's significance as a security, migration, health, and trade partner, highlighting its crucial role in the sub-region. He described the relationship as "very strong" and "continuing to thrive."
His sentiments were echoed by Rolf Olson, the Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Ghana, who praised the exceptional collaboration, particularly in law enforcement. Olson cited the area of extradition and the rule of law as a strong example of this cooperation.
"Since President Mahama took office, Ghana has extradited nine individuals to the US through a formal legal process involving the Attorney-General and the Ministry of the Interior. This is an extraordinary achievement, and a testament to the efficiency of Ghanaian authorities," Olson stated.
Olson also revealed that another suspect was arrested just recently based on a US extradition request, emphasizing the strong cooperation between the two countries. While the finalization process may take time, he noted that the partnership has been exceptionally strong.
Most of the extradited individuals were linked to cybercrime cases, including online impersonation schemes that defrauded victims, often older individuals, of millions of dollars. "Cybercrime knows no boundaries, and these cases involve individuals who, if proven guilty, should not be allowed to exploit others," Olson added.
Both officials stressed the importance of upholding the rule of law as a central pillar of the partnership. They expressed pride in the progress made by Ghana and the United States in strengthening justice and security cooperation.
